Delve into the creative process and witness the evolution of Makandal during a second showing of this highly anticipated new work. Ten acclaimed actors will read the newly finished libretto by Carl Hancock Rux, immersing

the audience in this richly layered story inspired by accounts of the first Haitian slave revolt.

Makandal explores themes of escape, freedom and homeland as it intertwines the struggles of refugees from Haiti, Cuba and the Dominican Republic with the journey of Haiti's legendary folk hero Makandal. Accompanied by newly composed music by Daniel Bernard Roumain and once again set against visual design by Edouard Duval-Carrie, the showing is followed by a discussion and reception with the artists. Scheduled to premiere Fall 2009.

Makandal has been co-commissioned by Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami, FL and Cal Arts in Valencia, CA.

Additional support for WaterWorks has been provided by The Rockefeller Foundation (New York City Cultural Innovation Fund): The Nathan Cummings Foundation; the New York State Music Fund established by the New York State Attorney General at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors; The Mid-Size Presenting Organizations Initiative, implemented by the Nonprofit Finance Fund and funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation; and the Artists

and Communities residency program, a program of Mid-Atlantic Foundation made possible by major funding from the JP Morgan Chase Foundation.

WaterWorks and Makandal are supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs; and the National Endowment for the Arts.
